For those of you who remember, last time I posted about my Trans Am I was having issues with the heads. Well, in addition to maxing out the stock valve train with a more aggressive cam, the machine shop did a compression test and found that several of the cylinders were leaking quite a bit. That would very much explain the serious lack of power and super weird idle. Anyways, the machine shop is going to do a valve job and all the other work I wanted done. Hopefully when it is all installed back on the car, my issues will be solved.
Very old picture btw

That's a bummer, but at least you know the problem and it's on it's way to being fixed.

Did you do anything to the engine prior? I've always operated under the assumption that any old car I buy for restoration will need the engine tanked and a head job done, or new heads.

I put different heads (6x instead of the stock 4x) on it that I thought were in good shape (they were free...), 4 barrel intake/carb, new cam/lifters, HEI distributor, and a couple other small parts.

Yeah I would have done a valve job and gotten new seats for the heads before putting them on. It's a bit of extra money up front, but it's worth the peace of mind to have it done.

I'm sorry ... were you saying something?

I would never re-cam without assessing the valve springs. Especially if the new cam is significantly more aggressive.

Yeah, you could just have a machine shop look at it. Or...

Hope you can get the car back on the road soon

No reason to beat yourself up over it. I made tons of mistakes on the Willys when I built it, skipped over important stuff, etc. that has come back to bite me in the ass. It happens.

Is it a pontiac 400 that you have? What's the tuning potential on these? I'm doing a little spreadsheet with shitloads of engines, weights and power you can get from them with basic tuning (porting, cams, bump in compression if they're low, fancy exhausts and a decent carb if it's that). It's taking ages, but do you know the numbers for a poncho?

Stock a later 400 (about '74 to '79) comes factory with 175 hp. It is very regular for people in the pontiac community to make 400hp and a mountain of torque by doing a "basic tuning." I'm doing some of the stuff on the list and am shooting for 300ish hp. Once you get above the 400hp mark, parts start to get expensive and you start to reach the limits of the block (only 2 bolt mains, thin walls, etc).
